Your Best Protection When Hiring a Handyman or Contractor

Hi, this is Bill from The Handi-Craftsman.

This is the first in a series of short educational videos about what to do before you hire a contractor or handyman. I’m starting with the most important principle of all.

Years ago there was a clothing retailer in New York named Sy Syms. His company motto was simple and powerful:

“An educated consumer is our best customer.”

That line stuck with me then, and it still rings true today—especially in the home-improvement world.

Here’s the reality: Not every person who calls themselves a contractor or handyman is fully honest or fully competent. Some are. Some aren’t. That’s one side of the equation.

The other side is you.

Before you hand over money or open your home to someone, you need to do a little homework:

• Who exactly are you dealing with?

• Have you looked at reviews?

• Have you seen examples of their previous work?

• Do you understand the scope of the project you’re about to start?

  
  

Those questions are the difference between a smooth project and a painful one.

I’ll be covering each of these areas in more detail in future videos—how to check licenses and insurance, what red flags to watch for, how to compare bids, common pitfalls on popular projects, and more. My goal is simply to share what I’ve learned from years of successful work so you can make better decisions.

You don’t have to agree with everything I say. But I do have a lot of real-world experience, and most of the people I work with end up trusting and recommending me. (Of course, every bushel has the occasional bad apple—my dad used to say that, and it’s still true.)
